BMW Gets Nokia HERE Digital Mapping: Revolutionizing Navigation
In a groundbreaking move, BMW recently agreed to a joint acquisition of Nokia HERE digital mapping, along with other automakers such as Audi and Daimler AG. In addition to optimizing mapping between the three luxury German automakers, this acquisition could mean a completely new platform for connectivity.
According to BMW, Nokia HERE digital mapping creates a platform for cloud-based maps and other services. This is the foundation of a new range of assistance features, precise mapping, and real-time vehicle information. Ultimately, this makes data storage and loading maps a thing of the past.
“HERE will play a key role in the digital revolution of mobility, combining high definition maps and data from vehicles to make travel safer and easier for everyone,” explained Harald Krüger, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG.
What does this mean for you? Aside from better maps and better services, this system also lays the groundwork for autonomous driving technology (aka self-driving cars). By using real-time information and accessing a virtually unlimited amount of driving data, cars will be able to drive themselves in the near future. Although the automakers are still working out the kinks, Orange County BMW is excited for the potential of this new technology!
